What Is a Culture Cafe?
At its core, Culture Cafe is a room full of humans from diverse backgrounds who have one common goal: to learn. By nurturing authentic conversations, we will learn about each other and about the world as a whole.
Though there are moderators, Culture Cafe does NOT have a teacher/student dynamic. We sit together around a table to reinforce the idea that since we are all human, we are all equal. We all deserve respect and the opportunity to share our worldviews.
At a Typical Meeting
We will go around the table to introduce ourselves, and then a volunteer will give a short presentation called a "Cultural Moment." Cultural Moments can be a song or dance, meal, PowerPoint presentation, game, or any other format by which the presenter can talk about their culture. After the Cultural Moment, we will do an activity as a group to facilitate discussion.
The activity changes every week and is usually a game of some sort. Once we complete and reflect on the activity, we will have conversations in pairs or as a group. There will be a different "official" conversation topic each week, but participants are welcome and encouraged to talk about anything that's on their mind.
